Epiphone and Gibson were seperate entities at one time, but at some point (I don't remember when) Gibson bought Epiphone, and they became Gibson's second rate brand. If you have the money, Gibson is usually the better buy, unless you're looking for something vintage. When Epiphone was independant, they made some good guitars, so for the older variety, the two brands were probably about par with each other.

Long story. Just don't waste your money on a cheap Epiphone if thats what you're looking at getting. Not that an epiphone is bad but only their top priced models are worth purchasing.
