Back in the days of 16K ram, the experts said it would require 256 megs or ram for them to make artificial intelligence; apple came out with a model that had 1 meg for $10K, and 256 megs seemed far off in the future. So we have gigs of ram, but no artificial intelligence. Is this another case of the experts, at least the ones running their mouth, not knowing what the hell they are talking about?

I believe AI is in use in a lot of programs that we use; we are just not aware of the usage. The technology is there, ram is certainly available as you point out, so why wouldn't it be used where it has an advantage to make a product more user friendly or efficient and thus more competitive?

I have run across several programs using AI, but can't recall the applications. I seem to recall that one application was in a Fuji digital camera. Ialso believe it's become so commonplace that it's not touted as it was 10 years ago.

Heh, I think you might remember when Bill Gates said the biggest hard drive you would ever need would be 10 megs!
There are several researchers out there developing next gen a.i. programs, My cousin and I have been writing one for about 10 years now with no end in sight, and that is just one I want to see grow in an artificial enviornment.
It as of now has the intellegence of a crow, but it dosen't seem to interact well with the world we built it, it keeps getting lost, but it is fun to watch it try to figure terrain....
The use of a.i. in some games is a wonder to see, to see a opponent think in the console is weird, though the thought is simple, it is thinking a wat around an obstacle to get to you!

The experts realized that to write good AI software requires more "Human Intelligence" than they expected.

Give them time, they'll figure it out eventually. Maybe.
