Also, if anyone has any ideas for employment in that area, I would greatly appreciate the input.

LOL.Some of you guys are so welcoming... you don't need to tell me about crime, or a terrible place to live. I currently live in Flint, Michigan... you can't get much worse than that. Flint was rated the 4th most dangerous city in the United States in 2006. I think I can handle Orlando.

The reason I'm moving is because I have family in the Tampa area, and winter is easy to get through. I've gone to Florida every year for vacation for the last 15 years and I love it, so I'm moving.

Most of the people you will meet here hate it and are constantly trying to move some where else. So be prepared to keep making new friends the whole time you live here. About places to hang out.. I guess Pleasure Island or Universal Stuidios City walk, those are about the only two safe places to hang out.. anywhere else and your taking your life into your own hands. Why are you moving here??

First you should know that in recent years, Orlando has become a BIG city. The Orlando area covers five counties and has well over 2 million inhabitants.Orlando is close to one hour drive from the nearest beach. It is possible to life frugally, but it does take work and diligence. One of the major problems is that unless you have a well running car, transportation can be a problem. There is a municipal bus service (GOLYNX.COM). You may want to look at a good map of the area. You will find that there are more than twenty cities you may want to see. All have good parts and other areas you might want to avoid. We have found for food costs, we use ALDI. There have opened many stores in this area and we find we are saving about 50% on our groceries. What you suggest won't be easy, but can be done. You mention that your daughter lives in Puerto Rico. She very possibly has friends in the Orlando area. They could be of great help..

Well there are the bars and clubs - but making friends there depends. Not sure how old you are or what part of town you will live in, but the downtown and Thornton park (Just east of downtown) areas might be places to start.

Also
First Thursday at Orlando Museum of Art - Cocktails and Socializing at the Museum
Walk around lake Eola. Helps if you have a dog.
Church and Church activities if you are so inclined. There are progressive and conservative mega churches and small churches. Take your pick.

As for Jobs - Service jobs abound. Better jobs a bit harer to comeby and it depends on your skills, experience and connections.

Good Luck.

My bf and I have an apartment here in Altamonte Springs...not to far from Orlando. I wish I could help you out more but I have no idea what you're into aside from film. Music plays a big part as to where you should hang out. I just have no idea of the things you enjoy to give you ideas. I've got 360 if you want to email me :)

I'm really suprised no one said you should find a local church yet. That's usually the first answer you see on questions like this. Maybe I just missed it haha

If u from New York or Jersey.. stay over there cuz its too many of yall down here. But I think you will like it there, i prefer orlando better than my city! Clubs.. city walk (universal studios) , pleasure island (downtown disney),
clubs:
dragon room
iconz (rap)
destiny (rap)
salsa latina
cocobongo
club mambo

and if u like to skateboard there's a skate park inside Fashion Bay mall (sp?) on international drive

Stay away. We don't want you. There's too many people. Crime is spiraling out of control. It's hot. The schools blow. Traffic sucks. Move to Georgia or something but stay the heck out of Florida.

If you do have to come here I suggest that you hang out in the South Orange Blossom Trail area, Pine Hills, or any other of our finer neighborhoods.

There are a lot of stores and restaurants in that area, and of course there's always Disneyworld and Universal Studios and Sea World, I'm sure they are always looking for new employees. My friend went to Universal Studios a few years ago and he loves it.

I would check out the local newspaper, they always have a lot of job listings.
