Wow back in time. I seem to remember it was oneupmanship with the number of books you had. I had to lick and stick the stamps in and the whole family got together to collect. Then you told everyone how many books especially the neighbours and then swap for some really tacky garden furniture. I think we managed the table, chairs and awful umbrella, they only lasted one summer! It was the goods not the green shield stamps that were embarrassing.

You are a star by bringing back that memory. No it didn't bother me, most people did it in those days. I also remember S&H Pink stamps, not as popular as Green Shiled stamps. In many ways it is the old fashioned method of loyalty cards.
I seem to remember reading in a newspaper how an entire family (kids as well?) all smoked 30+ ciggies a day for a year and got an Austin Mini. Probably all died of cancer the next week.

I was never embarrassed about my mom paying for anything with green shield stamps, we were poor so every bit helped.

Didn't you have to redeem those at the Green Stamps store? We use to collect green stamps and fill up the books. I think in the end we got a couple of lawn chairs with them. It was fun.

I haven't thought about those for years!
I don't remember ever being embarrassed. We used to look forward to buying something with the stamps we saved.

Nope, but my dad embarrasses me by tearing apart shelving units when the shopping assistant doesn't do what he thinks.
