In today's politically correct times, it seems that it's only important to keep from offending people with darker skin.

Yes fireball, but most black people are called African Americans and were also born here. I never got that one.

Maybe because having been in the majority for centuries, the European-Americans have long since made it the accepted practice of being called either White or just American where as everyone else was labeled by the country of their ancestors. It means you never have to SAY "You don't really belong here", it is inferred.

Think of it as a kinder, gentler racism.

well I think this is a fab question...
I have no idea, I am American and I consider myself white
maybe we need to find the reason why people like calling themselves this or that ex. African American or Cuban-American, Italo Americano and so forth. I think that if you came from abroad and established here then became a citizen of this country you are entitle to call yourself African American or Italian American, Cuban America, Bulgarian American and so forth, but if you where born here you are American, your ancestors or parents, relatives are "whatever" American but you are American, plain white, black, Indian, Latino, Hispanic etc etc etc

I'm white and I want to be referred to as white, not European American. Likewise, I don't like to refer to blacks as African American. The reason being is because it just isn't correct. Africa is made up of many countries, including Egypt. And Egyptians aren't black, so I personally feel African American isn't a correct term, therefore I personally don't use it. Good luck. 2D

They are. Look in a dictionary:

Main Entry: Euro-American
Function: noun
1 : a person of both European and American ancestry
2 : an American of European and especially white European descent
