Right now, the only reason I can think that you might need that much RAM is to run a server that is serving to a group of client machines.
I said, RIGHT NOW. There is a famous quote from the 1970s developers of DOS operating system. "Why would anybody ever need more that 640K of memory?"
The hardware industry is driven by the gaming industry. It may seem extreme right now, but within the next few years, 8 GIG of memory could become standard. Two years ago you could run just about every high end game on the market with 256 Meg of memory. Now PCs come with a GIG on a normal basis.

Yes - professional video processing, or multi-track audio processing. Video consumes huge amounts of memory. If you are adding some complex special effects it takes a lot of computer power to do it quickly. Do you remember when if someone told you they had a Gigabyte of RAM you know they were lying? As software gets more powerful the computer hardware has to keep up too.
BTW: The new desktop Mac has 16 GB of available RAM space, and an 8-core processor.

Not unless running a server and even so Windows XP will not recognize anymore than 3GB of ram unless using the /3GB switch in the Boot.ini file and then enen can only it will recognize 4GB. I am not fimiliar wiith the linux OS enough to know what the RAM limitations are on there but as far as windows goes 8GB would be usless.
Good luck hope this helps

RAM is always going to be faster than a hard drive.
For example, if I had 8 gigs of ram, I could create a ram drive for Battlefield 2 and still have plenty of memory left over for the operating system.
More memory = more and faster space to work in. If hard drives were faster than memory then we wouldn't care about how much RAM our computer has available.

Not for personal use but for professional use there are tons of reasons why someone would need 8GB of RAM.

Not unless they're running a server. XP/Vista won't recognize anything over 3GB of RAM unless you're using the 64-bit edition.

I don't even think anyone makes a computer capable of holding that much ram.
