My opinion is that this is not a coincidence but it has been developed based on a single mistake, when some scholars read other scholars work and make the same assumption, well it is more of an archaeological question, because there is nothing in astronomy, cosmology or astrophysics which can give any tangeable probability to what may happen, too much speculation without any data trends.

I do work in Egyptian hieroglyphic decipherment, and I am very sceptical about cuneiform decipherment and mayan pictograph decipherment. Sometimes mathematical work can be more easily deciphered. But until I see how they deciphered the mayan calendar I would be very sceptical about any conclusion drawn from that.

A Bible scholar tried to show that the Bible suggests Judgement day is in 2011, but his work is in error in two areas, but this is a Bible chronology question which I don't have time for, but I will answer if you are interested, then email me.

"Despite the publicity generated by the 2012 date, Susan Milbraath, curator of Latin American Art and Archaeology at the Florida Museum of Natural History, stated that "We [the archaeological community] have no record or knowledge that [the Maya] would think the world would come to an end" in 2012."

"For the ancient Maya, it was a huge celebration to make it to the end of a whole cycle," says Sandra Noble, executive director of the Foundation for the Advancement of Mesoamerican Studies in Crystal River, Fla. To render Dec. 21, 2012, as a doomsday or moment of cosmic shifting, she says, is "a complete fabrication and a chance for a lot of people to cash in"."

I think you are actually asking about 12/21/2012. Who knows. Many have predicted the end before.

"The Hopi and Mayan elders do not prophesy that everything will come to an end. Rather, this is a time of transition from one World Age into another. The message they give concerns our making a choice of how we enter the future ahead. Our moving through with either resistance or acceptance will determine whether the transition will happen with cataclysmic changes or gradual peace and tranquility. The same theme can be found reflected in the prophecies of many other Native American visionaries from Black Elk to Sun Bear."

At the end of the Mayan calander? I highly doubt it. The only chance that all life will be over by then is thermonuclear war, which is pretty likley at some point. Back to your question, how many predictions of the apocalypse have been correct so far?

If that is what the Mayan calender predicts, then the Mayans were way off since they were all killed by the Spaniards about 500 years ago.
