As with any 'normal' job actors hold down while pursuing their dream job... you call in sick when you have to. So while you're still just taking classes and have a fairly normal schedule, bank up those sick days and vacation time and make friends anyone who might trade schedules with you later, especially at the last minute (don't know if policemen can do that??) but do what you can to prepare for all that craziness later. Then when you get a pilot or something, be prepared to take a leave of absence or quit and lose your seniority. Make sure your boss loves you enough to give you another chance if things don't work out and you need to come begging to come back.

You know the guys will rib you about this, right? I can see the hazing already... Your locker will have a star on it at some point and I'm sure a small Oscar trophy will appear. I hope it will all be in good fun though and you can take everything with a great attitude. Anyway, the best of luck to you and maybe someday you will have the best police escort to an awards ceremony or premier anyone has ever seen!

Good luck!!

As far as learning the craft, most definitely. As far as pursuing a career, that would be tough. When you get called for an audition you have to be there when they say. I'm assuming you can't take a few hours off in the middle of a shift. Usually you get the call for an audition the day before. Not enough time to switch shifts. Now is the toughest time in history to make a living as an actor. Reality TV has taken a big bite out of the available parts. As has runaway production and SAG ultra low budget contracts. If you want to persue it as a craft then I'm sure you could fit it in to you schedule. When you've made enough progress you may want to consider a different survival job.
