Well it really depends.....
If it was a male gorilla hands down the gorilla would win. A full grown silverback can top out around 450-500lbs (wild, captive can get a bit higher but they are learning the heavier weight in male captives is causing heart problems so most are kept on a diet) and it is 100% strength. Though a chimp is also nothing but strength they only top out around 150lbs. A single blow from the gorilla could kill the chimp.. the lil guy really has no chance. That is even without factoring in the gorillas teeth, again which are far larger than the chimps. Nonetheless primate bites are ALWAYS nasty no matter what species age or gender is doing the biting.
Where the chimp would have a better chance is if it was against a female gorilla. A female is still solid strength but they are far smaller and tend to top out 220. The female gorilla still has a bit of an upper hand when it comes to size, weight and strenght, but it does give the chimp a far better chance than with a male silverback. Overall I would still pick the female gorilla, but the chimp still has one heck of a chance.
The chimp would have its best chance if it was not alone, male chimps are known to gang up and kill other members of their troop or rival groups.
If you had two or more chimps against a single female gorilla I would pick the chimps. In all honesty I would say it would take far more chimps to take down a male silverback.

Coyote is quite correct. But one thing that was not brought into that conversation is that fact that chimps are aggressive where as gorillas are passive, unless threatened. But even then, most gorilla advances are threats and only that. Chimps on the other hand have been known to wage war on other chimp clans, using weapons, none the less. Wood clubs and such. Both are very intellegent and I would hate to see a confrontation such as this, but as Coyote said, I think the gorilla has the upper hand in a one on one confrontation........Hands Down........But in a clan on clan conflict, I believe the chimps might be able to wipe out a gorilla clan due to the fact that they will team up on the gorillas and take them one at a time, whereas the gorillas main defender is the dominate male, which would not stand a chance against 10 or 15 chimps.

A Chimp would most likely bite and tear a man apart, they are more agile, stronger and faster then an average man, although they would likely back off in the face of adversity where as a person with a million dollars on the line might keep fighting with a broken arm. Now if your talking a Gorilla or Orangutan then the man has No chance at all, they could tear a man limb from limb within seconds. But if I was putting money down on a chimp vs man fight, my money would be on the chimp. .

Aggression doesn't work so well if your literally torn in half . It's a human perception we like to imagine being the best fighter . When nature shows relaxed and quick powerful movements (i.e passive until its released ) win's . So if we're talking a fight , the charging Gorillas would probably use the chimps as clubs to beat the others to death , or as soon as they get to close be thrown so far away or into the others their numbers would become meaningless . . Honey badgers now that's a another story .

There are videos around of male gorillas tossing younger gorillas around. Even if a group of chimps attacked a male gorilla, he will just chucks them. I would say it would not be possible for chimps to take down a healthy male gorilla.

Gorilla wins. The only time the chimp has a chance is if a gang of chimps attacks a single gorilla.
