To be frank, no mother accepts her son's marriage, either to a greek or to a foreighner...And in case she does, she becomes a nasty mother in law soon after the marriage...
According to my opinion, if a greek man loves a woman sencerely he must not take into consideration his familie's opinion, and he must proceed with a civil marriage, respecting his companion's freedom of religious choice....

It's true that most Greeks are orthodox but it's also truth that they are always activate by their heart and their emotions.
Many Greek people have married people from other nations and religions and they have very good marriages. Many Greek people changed their religion to get married with someone who loved. Still, many Greek people even if they don't want to change their religion, they get married with a political marriage.
About some old Greek Mothers, it's true that they have not accept the union, not only this but neither kind of union for their valuable baby son. Happily, there aren't many anymore and there aren't so many problems because of them. But even if it happens to not accept the union a Greek who would like to call him MAN he always do what he wants.

You can do a civil marriage.I am against the religious marriage, even if it is the same religion.Because it is an act of the state...
I dont understand where is the problem. And of course nobody has to change religion.
If his family accept the union, doesnt have to di with the religion, but with the personal opinion of each member. It could be the same, be sure if it was for a greek girl who wouldnt be the ideal for her ''dear''son..
Dont pay attention t anyone, if you love each other, there is also the Town Hall, which is more valid...
Concerning the religion of the greeks orthodox, if the girl is from the Middle East....which means muslim,do you know that for islam it is not so good(according to the tradition)to marry a man from other religion? The man can, but the girl no.So, i dont think that we have just rules...

That's not only about Greek families, it's about every nation and religion. For example, a muslim mother or father wouldn't be so happy if their son chose to marry a greek orthodox or catholic woman. Is it not?
In general, true love has to overcome barriers such as religion and nationality. It happens every day in Greece, and it happens all around the world.

My Great Grandmother who was Greek married a Lebaneese man. Her family disowneed her. It took 3 generations (50+ years) Before the families reunited and accepted the fact that it doens't matter where you come from as long as you love eachother.

Many people in Greece have married people of other religions. Their family doesn't have a problem with that, as long as the new wife or husband doesn't demand that we change our religion or that our children have a different religion.
