Hang shiny mylar strips, mylar balloons, or aluminum foil around area of home. Woodpeckers do not like shiny, mirror-like materials.
Strategically aim a sprinkler with a motion detector (Scarecrow) at the location where the bird is drumming. A few squirts with the sprinkler often deter the woodpecker from returning.
If a woodpecker has started a hole, cover the hole with flashing or aluminum. This will minimize further damage, and may scare the woodpecker from further drumming on your home.
If the location is near a window, it may be worthwhile to hang a static cling hawk on nearby windows. Coopers hawks are a natural predator and may deter the offender. Sometimes, hanging latex balloons with large, stenciled eyes around the home works as a scare tactic.
Try tacking up some netting three inches from the outside of the house. The net will keep the woodpecker away from the wood and is a longer lasting solution.

Purchase a plastic owl and hang in on an eave by a fishing line (invisible to birds). As the owl turns in the breeze, it will give the woodpecker the impression it is alive and deter the woodpecker from coming near. You may have to hang more than one. We did that because ladderback (small) woodpeckers were making holes in our redwood siding and nesting in the house. It worked well. We also tied old cd's by fishing string at random heights to deter them--didn't work as well as the owls and the neighbors thought we were nuts. . . they still do.

I only WISH we had a woodpecker! We've got squirrels, who got in through a decayed piece of trim, into the attic and eventually gnawed 5 holes through the drywall in the ceiling! I would trap them but others would just move in.
Anyway, I'd try the idea of scaring him off with those metal strips. Or you could have animal control to trap and relocate it. Planting trees is a good idea, too; i'm sure the bird would prefer THAT!

We were told to hang strips of aluminum foil off the house, like little flags. The woodpeckers apparently dont like the shininess and the movement. We never had trouble with them, so I guess it worked. I put some in the trees near our house for good measure.
