Pubs are not losing business. Smokers are the minority these days, so the majority are still using the pub and many are staying longer because the are not being polluted by the thoughtless smoker.
And yes the ban will be enforced.

Yes. the anti-smoking brigade are on a roll. I can guarantee there will be little men roaming the streets waiting to pounce whilst some old dear is getting the sh*t kicked out of her by the local mugger round the corner.
As for pubs losing money. Don't listen to the propoganda being spouted. Go & have a look at Scotland & Ireland. Been to both recently on businesss. The cities pubs are surviving - just. But go out in the country side & have a butchers. Thats where the truth lies.

i think the heavier penalties they are introducing along with the ban will help enforce it but time will tell,
i dont think pubs will lose business as there are no pubs to go to where you can smoke so its either dont smoke or dont go to the pub at all and im pretty sure most british pub dwellers are not about to stay home. there will also be more people willing to go there who didnt like to before because of the smokey air!

We have recently passed a smoking ban in Ohio, it is enforced and I know individuals who will call if it is broken.
For those who say it will not hurt business, you are wrong. Business's that are on state lines are severly hurt if the next state is a smoking state. Downtown Cincinnti has lost many of it's bars and restaraunts to Kentucky. There used to be a large bar area on Main street, it has since closed down. Unless the smoking ban is nationwide it will hurt business!

Oh yes..... I live in a country where everybody smokes (spain) and I never thought that when they introduced the no smoking laws, that they would last more than a month (as usual in spain.)
BUT one year later they still work.... one just has to choose one's bar or resturant ( smoking/no smoking)
I smoke and personally I find it really pleasent to eat in a no smoking place.... Most people nip out into the street for a smoke.... the advantage here is the weather.
Back in cold wet blighty I doubt if nipping outside for a quick smoke in the pouring rain has the same pleasure... but bit has worked in Ireland which is even wetter.... good luck.

Yes I have seen the bans enforced in the United States with great effect.
People will learn to accept the ban in the UK like they have done in many places in the US. It has not hurt business and I would say it probably has helped business as people like myself will now enter more restaurants.

This has brought up another question in the village i live in.
My local has obviously banned smoking so you have to go outside to smoke , you can't take your drink out with you because you can't drink in the street, there is no beer garden so you can't go there either.
So you have to leave your drink inside ,now there have been a lot of cases of spiking with that ghb stuff on both men and women so what do you do with your drink ,you can't always leave it with a friend so what happens?
The drink spikers will have a field day.......

it's not so much the pubs losing business!-look to the future. the government takes a lot of taxes from tobbaco sales. it will have to recoup the loss from elsewhere-car tax/council tax etc. and also in years to come there will be a defecit in the monetary resources sector-so the state pension will get a hammering. the list goes on.

I sure hope they do. I live in a city with a smoking ban and it is enforced. If they don't enforce it, they PAY.
