i have a really hard time...and maybe my system isn't the fairest ... i usually do give out best answers to people who's answer just stuck out from the rest OR if i cant find the BEST answer i give it to someone who answered my previous questions with a good answer but didn't get a BA..
so two very important things..
1) answerer should understand my question
2) be sincere
3) readable..

It really depends on the category. When I post questions in Polls & Surveys, it is usually for fun and I would pick the answer that is the funniest.
If I post a "serious" question, I choose the answer that is the most helpful or is the most complete answer. I prefer answers from people who give sources and have actual experience.

i have been wondering the same thing, i either choose the one that makes me smile or the one that actually answers the question but i try to be the sweetest so people will choose me, it doesn't seem to work though =(

The one that is the best answer. But when a person answers in two words and someone tries to give me a detailed answer, I choose that second answer for best answer. The person who makes the biggest effort deserves the 10 points, even if I didn't need so many details. That's why.

It depends on the question..
If I'm asking about something that I want a specific answer to, then of course I'll pick the one who answers the question...
If it's something more random that doesn't require a specific answer then I'd pick the one that made me laugh or impressed me the most...

sometimes the most accurate
sometimes the one with Most Thumbs Up
sometimes the one with a link to confirm the answer
sometimes the only one to answer
sometimes it goes to our "leader"
sometimes to an upcoming Newbie
There are no "hard and fast" rules that I follow.
