Research publishers. Don't be afraid to be bold or small. The bottom-line is to get it published. Publication will open doors for you. Go to the library and just pick through the newest books that are comparable to yours in length and complexity.

Write down the publishers. Research those companies via the web, and you'll find where to send a letter of inquiry and how to submit your book for publication. Don't rule out small publishing houses. They may see your book as they one they've been waiting for.

Also consider a University press of the state in which you live.

Expect to be rejected and rejected. Keep trying. It's not a measure of your worth.

Also, consider publishing excerpts of your book in literary magazines. You can find those in most academic libraries and some large book stores.

Good Luck. :)

Writer's Market annual edition or the Literary Market Place annual edition. In these two books you will find the names and addresses of small publishers and literary agents. Big publishing houses, like Random House, will only look at your writing submitted to them by a respected literary agent. Make sure you read the advise given in the Writer's Market about how to send query letters and possible first chapters. Ever since the personal computer revolution in American households, publishers are now receiving more manuscripts than ever. On average about 1 out of 500 submissions to small publishing houses are accepted. The self publishing route is no better. There 1 out of 220 books self published sells over 500 copies. Yet this is the price you need to pay to see your dreams come true. Go for it.

You start by querying literary agents. This is done with a one page letter describing yourself and your book. Sometimes the agent will request you include the first few pages or chapters, but that is an individual preference.

There are several websites out there that will help you find an agent, my favorite is QueryTracker.net at http://www.querytracker.net/ . It is free and has a list of literary agents and also tools to help you keep track of who you already queried and who you haven't, plus more.

They do a good job of keeping the crooks off their lists, but it is still a good idea to double check at http://www.sfwa.org/beware/twentyworst.h...

There are a lot of crooks out there. Never pay anyone to read or publish your book. A real agent will never ask for money except as a percentage of your royalties.

Keep in mind that finding an agent and getting published is not an easy process. Some people have to query hundreds of agents before they find one who will accept them (sadly, some never get accepted), but be persistent and keep trying.

You should also visit http://www.absolutewrite.com/forums/,... one of the largest forums for writers. They can be very helpful.

Good luck.

Welcome to the wacky, fun-packed world of rejection.
Every writer suffers this malady when they have no agent or publisher connections.
My YA novel GAMEPLAYER: The Genesis Portal was a bear to find a publisher willing to handle it. This is even though I have two previously published non-fiction books to my credit. Little did I realize that my first publisher Focal press has no ties to fiction publishing.

Do the basic steps:
1) Go through Writer's Market and list all agents and publishers who handle your genre.
2) Send a query letter to each listing following their submission guidelines to the letter.
***go online to their site to get their up-to-date guidelines and the current person's name to address your query.***
3) Prepare to receive reams of rejection letters and don't take them personally. They're not.
4) Don't give up.
I read an article on Steven King that mentioned he was rejected so many times that he resorted to writing magazine articles to get published.

Wishing you the best of luck with your writing, and a word to the wise. When you contact agents or publishers for God's sake use your spell-check and NO IM speak!!!
