Vista on a NEW machine is probably OK, but make sure there are Vista drivers for your Printer, Scanner, Camera, etc. FIRST. These are what cause most migration problems. Not all applications work in Vista either.
Upgrading to Vista is not a good idea YET, wait until all the manufacturer's have Vista drivers in place.

The technology of XP is quite old now. XP has been around since 2001. It is time to embrace the new and the new is Vista. There is a lot out there to choose from; with various speeds available and Nvidia GeForce works even better with Vista. By the way SP1 and SP2 means Service packs 1 & 2. These are to do with the security of your machine which Microsoft provide. Go for Vista. The interface is clearer and it is the way forward. All the best now.

This really depends on what you want your laptop to do and what you want to use it for primarily.
I have used XP Home for almost 3 years on my Dell machine. I surf the net quite a bit, download software drivers and programs, play PC games like "Fear" and "Doom 3" and generally spend a lot of time working on my PC at home. XP Home has very rarely let me down and I'm happy with it.
There has been a lot of hype (most of it from Microsoft themselves!) and a lot of reviews written about Vista, in comparison to Xp. And they all come up with the same answers.
1. Its really a "warmed up" version of XP Home. Ok, the menus and graphical interface is good but it doesn't do things any better.
2. There are too many versions of the one product - about 6 or 7 I think.
3.No new software has as yet been written exclusively for Vista.
4. There are still problems with hardware and software drivers running in Windows Vista.
If you really want to use it, it's up to you. You could buy your laptop with XP Home on it, try for a while and then upgrade to Vista. If it was me, I would give Vista a year to get settled in and then go with it.
Here's a useful link to Mocrosft's comparison of the different versions of Vista:

Oh u should definately go in for the windows XP home version...windows vista might look flashy and all but it'll drain all of your laptops resources that would otherwise be put to much better use.
Also I dont think the Vista experience is all it is made out to be...ull get tired of it very soon.

Get windows XP first, then you can usually get a free upgrade to Vista later on down the road. (Vista is extremely unstable right now, as are all Microsoft products) if it was up to me, I'd buy a Macbook or a Macbook pro with the LED LCD screen. you will like mac OS better than windows (its even better than vista, and doesn't hog your RAM, processor and hard drive) Although if you decide to buy a mac, i would wait until october to buy it, because thats when they are going to come out with their new version of OS X (10.5, Leopard) it looks awesome! (check it out at apple.com)
Good Luck!

Windows XP home.
Vista sucks right now and isn't compatable with anything. No one should bother with Vista untill its second release.

Chose XP Home, belive me, I had Vista and it's a hell with it. It has many errors, and it don't lets you to play a game, or watch video.

Dado let me tell you mate, I used to be a sceptic about vista as I was always using XP pro. but now I have new computer with vista prem on it I would not look back.Only one small complaint is that you might have to update certain drivers but you can get those from Microsoft website.
