GREEN DAY LYRICS

"Are We The Waiting"

Starry nights city lights coming down over me
Skyscrapers and stargazers in my head
Are we we are, are we we are the waiting unknown
This dirty town was burning down in my dreams
Lost and found city bound in my dreams

And screaming
Are we we are, are we we are the waiting
And screaming
Are we we are, are we we are the waiting

Forget me nots and second thoughts live in isolation
Heads or tails and fairytales in my mind
Are we we are, are we we are the waiting unknown
The rage and love, the story of my life
The Jesus of suburbia is a lie

And screaming
Are we we are, are we we are the waiting
And screaming
Are we we are, are we we are the waiting unknown
Are we we are, are we we are the waiting
And screaming
Are we we are, are we we are the waiting unknown
Are we we are, are we we are the waiting unknown

My guess is this:

It reminds me of how I felt when i lived in Manhattan, after growing up around Atlanta in a conservative suburb.
I sometimes felt I'd died and gone to heaven.

The part about "forget me nots...fairytales" is tough to decifer, but maybe the
forget me nots and second thoughts symbolize sweet talk and insecurity or self -doubt , heads or tails and fairytales are maybe what he remembers of suburbia as a child, and now that he's in New York he sees the stars.
He sees people waiting, some waiting for Jesus, perhaps.
And he feels the intensity of his experience of love and rage, not denying the rage part by being hypocritical, is more pure than the suburban or smalltown religion he got away from.

Since he mentions Jesus, I think he's asking "Are we the ones waiting for Jesus to return?" Are we the ones working in the fields where one will be taken and the other left...I think Billy (is it?) is a Christian and is speaking about the second coming of Christ. "Til then, I walk alone.." He seems to sing alot about walking the city streets, but he doesn't really seem to be searching for something. And didn't in the the other song (the lyrics I just mentioned) he say something about wishing someone "up there" will find him? Maybe I got it wrong...maybe I need to look at the lyrics, but I think he's alluding to Christ.
