I used to like a guy that said he was moody/depressed/low self-esteeem as long as he can remember. Do you think someone can be born with this condition? Maybe those kids are more susceptible to the events of the environment so they can get affected for example by parents with issues like alcoholism and issues like that and their siblings who are not that sensitive do not react to that? Do you think these kids are usually smarter or more intelligent on some level just because they see/feel what is happening around them and are different than other kids?

1) Can you be born depressed?
I think a person can be born with imbalances in brain chemistry, so they would lean toward depression.

2) children of depressed parents seem to be more susceptible to depression. this could be a genetic thing, or that their parents did not know how to get out of their own depresion, so they could not teach this to their children.

3) some children, even in the same family, are more sensitive.

4) IQ tests typically measure math and english/reading/communication skills.
The sensitive child might be more intelligent ( or not)
but i don't think it will typically show up with a strong positive correlation on an IQ test. HOWEVER, a lot of depressed kids are introverted, read a lot, and may well test as more intelligent on IQ tests than other people would think.

If would not be surprised to find out someone has done research on depression and intelligence. Your librarian could explain how to search the professional literature for this sort of research. You might even find something using Google.

Ah - here is an article about this online

the Google search terms are:

depression IQ OR intelligence correlation

(make sure that the OR is all caps)

People are all born with a disposition toward personality traits. Given that, however, people have choices they may on how these dispositions manifest themselves. Environment is another strong influence and how we respond to it is also a matter of choices. Unfortunately, some people have very limited choices and very little chance to develop a way of choosing. Those factors may also sharpen your vigilance as a survival mechanism. I don't know if that would make you more intelligent, but it may make you more aware.
Interestingly, research studies have found that people with depression seem to have a clearer sense of reality than non-depressed people do, who may color their perception with optimism or pessimism. However, people with a more positive view of the world tend to live longer. Of course, people with a more positive view of the world are also probably in safer parts of the world that allow them to live longer.

no children cannot be born depressed. nor are they born happy. how they grow up to be happy or depressed depends on what happens to them in their lives. they could have the gene for mental illness but that doesn't necessarily mean that they will become mentally ill. it's more or less by chance that it happens. people with depression or any other type of mental illness are no more intelligent than other people. but we do seem to see the world a little different from others.

Yes. to all! My Father's mother committed suicide, as did my father, and It is getting worse with each generation, My eight year old is currently on Prozac for depression, he was throwing fits and saying he wants to kill himself, he said he deserves to go to hell.. and my six year old is going through it now to! I give them love, attention, (ALL MY Time), and i nurture them, I have sacrificed everything for them, and i Know it's inherited so I Will do whatever it takes to help them..And life as hard as it is now, it's hard enough for adults, can you imagine what our children are feeling? My eight year old is doing better since I have put him on meds, but Thanks to my DNA they will always have depression. And that is a heavy burden for me to carry!
