Hi all, I just started a new fish tank with an undegravel filter. I have 2 guppies, one male and one female and 2 apple snails. The tank is just cycling and I noticed a few days ago that the ammonia levels were spiking so I added a ammonia reducer (natural bacteria - ammo down). The female guppy had given birth to some frys a week ago and they are doing fine.

The ph levels, salinity, and water hardness are all ok. The apple snails are active and show signs of good health.

My concern and question is regarding my guppies. In the past 2 days, their gills are getting really red. Also, the gravid spot on the female has also signs of redness. I noticed that the male and female guppies dont stop swimming and that the male guppy is always chasing the female guppy. Does anyone know whats going on with the guppies? Are they going to die? Please help. Thank you.

Additional info : I feed them everyday with crushed up flakes and brine shrimp eggs (mainly for the fry but the adults love them too). I have a feeling i'm overfeeding them but they do finish all the flakes and the shrimp eggs in under 3 minutes.

I will agree with both of the others, the red gills are most likely due to the ammonia levels in the tank. The best way to handle the ammonia is with water chanegs, not hemicals. Do a 50% water cange everyday to keep the ammonia in check and to help the baby guppies grow. Once the cycle in the tank is complete you can do a 25% each day for the babies.

I would suggest you not feed the fish brine shrimp eggs. They may really like them, but the shells are very hard for them to digest and can cause constipation very easily. Hatch the brine shrimp instead. They will love this even more and you won't have to worry about constipation killing the baby fish.

As far as what's up with the adult guppies, well, male guppies always want to mate. He will constantly chase her in an attempt to mate. Adding another female would help, but not when the tank is still cycling. She should be ok until th tank cycles and until some of the babies grow enough that he will be interested in those females too.

The redninig of the gills sounds as if it has been the amonia, And next time just do a water change , Dont buy ammo down etc, And the male guppies do chase females almost constantly i suggest you get more female you should keep 1 male to very 2 females 1:2 so that the female is not been harased 24-7

As the other guy says the reddening is more than likely down to the ammonia, however, this can be a major problem if your PH is also to the upside of neutral, try and keep the Ph below in the 6.5 region while its having ammonia spikes this should help to eleviate ammonia burns on the gills

do no longer pay attention to that 2d guy, he's packed with it. the different fish on your tank in all probability ate the fry. pink gills are a demonstration of ammonia poisoning. in case you have no longer have been given a attempting out equipment you could take a pattern of water to the placement the place you got the fish and have them try it for ammonia and nitrites.
