I am taking care of my friend's fishes, until the time she gets back from NC, and she told me that they need to be fed 3x a day. However, the food flakes just lay on the bottom of the tank, and it results in filth. Do you think, i should just feed them 1x a day instead?? Do you think they would die?? Any sort of help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

In my humble opinion and vast experience I have found that nearly every aquarium keeper overfeeds their tanks. At the Maximum fish should only be fed once a day unless your targeting a specialized species ( more commonly found in marine aquariums). I personally would only feed once every other day.

Fish are oppurtunistic feeders, meaning they will typically until they are full everytime food is present whether they need it or not. This is because in the wild it may be many days before they find another oppurtunity to eat. This also means that they will spend most of thier time scavenging and recycling excess nutrients that acumulate in the aquarium. ANy large excess of food left to sit at the bottom of the aquarium will only foul the water increasing the chances of mortality of it's inhabitants

Fish only need tiny amounts of food because their metabolism is different to warm blooded blooded animals.
I suggest you syphon out the uneaten food, and replace the removed water with fresh water.
Then feed a little food every other day. If this is a long-term situation watch how quickly the fish eat the food, and only feed what they eat in 3 or 4 minutes.
If your friend is only away for a short time (less than 2 weeks) don't feed them at all... they will be okay.

Good luck.

I feed my Tetra's 2 times a day. But Fish will live a long time with out food. It's better to under feed them, Than to over feed them. So it wouldn't hurt if you only feed them once a day. GOOD LUCK

Feed them 3 times a day, just don't feed them as much. Only feed as much as the fish will eat in 3 minutes. It sounds like the fish aren't even hungry. Don't mess with her system too much, but a little less food would be good for the fish.

feed them once or twice a day. But if you feed twice make sure each feeding would be half the amount as if you did it in 1 feeding.
