There are congressmen and senators that have been in Washington for 40 years or more. They are completely out of touch with Americans. Senators were supposed to be appointed by governors, meaning they would be out every time a new governor was elected, and congressmen were supposed to leave their hometown for 2-4 years to REPRESENT in DC, then go home.

What happened? Would we be better off with term limits? Are these people completely out of touch?

Yes - I think there should be! Maybe that would maybe influence the amount of money spent by big Corporations buying their votes! They wouldn't invest as much in a politician who would be gone next term or 8 year from now!

Another point to is that the career politicians are the ones who have enough financial backing to stay in power! This lowers the effectiveness of our democracy! It lets those in the upper 10% of our country financially, dictate everything that happens in our country!

Of course, money does buy just about everything and influence just about everyone!

Why is it that we never see a average guy/girl running for Congress/Senate/President?

No financial backing!

I personally would like to see term limits for members of Congress - three two year terms for Representatives, and two six year terms for Senators. I think these people get in and get their 100k salaries and their pockets lined by the lobby, and completely forget about the people they supposedly represent.

Help! Stop us before we elect the candidate of our choice! Let's keep sending untrained amateurs to Washington where they will face a steep learning curve before they figure out how to make the system work!

We already have term limits. They are called elections. Unfortunately people keep electing these same old fat cats back in so they can bring more money back to their states.
