Frontline and Advantage are not 'bunk' remedies, trust me on that. It's just that you have to approach the problem correctly - with a flea infestation as bad as you have, you can't just pop the spot-on and ta-ta, problem solved.

The flea lifescycle involves laying thousands of eggs each, both on your animal and in your house. Presumably you know this as you got rid of your carpet. Fleas can still breed even where there are no carpets however, so you still need to treat your house.

I would suggest spraying your house, including soft furnishings and your car if the dog goes in it, and continued regular use of Frontline spot-on. Once it seems the fleas are gone, move on to use of Frontline Plus - it treats the environment too, by killing the eggs, so you won't need to spray anymore. Lastly, make sure the spot-on stuff is getting right on to the animal's SKIN, not the fur - important!

This method works. It's just that fleas are tricky little buggers, as you've discovered. I'm now going to read the other answers to this question and probably end up sobbing with frustration over people's suggestions to use Dawn dish soap, call the exterminators, move house etc etc.

If your pets always have lots of fleas, then it may be a sign that they're unhealthy and you should treat their underlying issues rather than usind band-aid solutions.
