I'm not a neurobiologist but I don't like the "two minds" idea implied in A) above. One mind to have the emotion and another mind to observe the emotion. I much prefer to think that self-consciousness is an integrated process. Wherein the very act of having an emotion includes alerting you to that emotion.

a.) makes the most sense to me. Whoever is right, you can bet that consciousness is an end-product of a very long and treacherous evolutionary process. I firmly believe that everything that makes us human can be found to one degree or another in the lower animals.
