I just started a 20 gallon aquarium. I really like clown loaches, but was told they should be in groups of 5 or more, same with corey's need at least two as they are playfull with each other.
If I were to start a second tank, to sustain 5 clowns and 3 coreys, knowing that they can grow to 3 inches, what size tank should I get?

You'd really need a 48"x15(18)"x24" for them many fish, yes Clown Loach have the ability to grow in excess of a foot but seldom reach 10" in the normal aquaria, I've currently got 8 of them in my 72"x24"x24", this is my second batch having lost the last of my originals last year, they were bought in the late 80's, the largest was 10" the rest between 7-8". Its really only above this size that they generally start to deepen and put on mass, the 10" fish was probably about 5-6" deep the rest tended to stay slim. They are very active fish so you really do need space, the larger the aquarium the better, but then that goes for any fish the larger the aquarium the more stable you make your system.

120 gallons would be your only real option. I am sure the people at the pet store didn't tell you that Clown Loaches get a foot long! If you want a resonably sized fish for your 20 gallon tank, Try 5 Yo-yo Loaches (the get 4 inches long and are pretty much mini Clown Loaches, their stripes are just a little different... They are very energetic though!) and with the Yo-yos, put 3 or more Corrys. Also, to that, you may want a small school of Tetras... they are all about the same size. Have fun with the Yo-yos if that is what you decide to do!

I have 4 clown loaches, and they're all over 6 inches long (one is 9 inches). For a 20 gallon tank, don't even think about it. But, consider a larger tank ... clowns are lots of fun.

I have them in a 200 gallon tank.

Clown loaches do NOT grow to 3 inches.... adults in the wild exceed 10 inches, often growing to over 12 inches. 6 inches in the aquarium is not uncommon.
Using the rule of 1 inch per gallon, you will see that your potential tank size should be at least 65 gallons, and preferably much bigger than this.

Clown loaches get really big and need a BIG tank for about 5 of them you would need a 90 galllon. Get 2-3 corys.
