I know people have used dw liquid for detergent , but how about the other way around?

soap is soap, you can use it to wash anything that's dirty, including your body and hair.

doggoneit and rosie recipe are correct. The only thing you must not do is to use a laundry detergent in a dishwashing machine. The suds woukld be awful.

Sure did when we didn't have dishwashing liquid and had dirty dishes. We were miles and miles away from the nearest store and funds were limited. No neighbors to borrow any from and that was the best solution at the time. But it worked. Just rinse them well.

I did years ago, when the clothes washing detergents weren't so fancy.

It certainly worked for washing up by hand

i would advise against that, residue chemicals on your plates arent exactly a good thing...
