With the greatest of respects to the man, my money is more on the guys who wrote the songs. Nat King Cole covered songs from many different writers.

Go to the following wiki and pay attention to the multitude of songwriters that he worked with:

As a means of expanding your musical knowledge, find some stuff by the range of excellent singers from the swing era: Bing Crosby, Al Martino, Frank Sinatra, Peggy Lee, Dina Shore, ... the list is probably endless.

The quality of the delivery is something that some singers have and others just barely miss - Matt Monro and Dusty Springfield were highly respected in the music industry for the emotional content imparted by their delivery. As was Billie Holliday.

I'm sure I could go on for ages discussing singers who have made an impact on my understanding of great musicians and songwriters, and that is what a personal opinion is for.

Your mission (if you choose to accept it...) is to hear as wide a range of singers (local and international) and form your own opinion.
