Haha, he's rude, all right! But that just shows how great an author J.K. Rowling is. I mean, I found myself wanting to smack him and every other character like him. That's what keeps me addicted. =)

Karkaroff's treatment of the 2nd boy shows a lot of Karkaroff's personality. He only wanted Krum to represent his school and thereby himself. Everyone was 2nd to Krum. This is why Karkaroff became a Death Eater. He has low self esteem and needed to associate with someone more powerful. With LV out of the picture, he wheedled his way into a position of power over children (no threat). Then he was blessed with Krum as a student and used him to uplift his own ego. It is a sad, pathetic life, but it is Karkaroff's. JK used the character to show what kind of followers LV had.

I think it's very much in character for the character. He's not supposed to be someone you like, and his ill treatment of this student supports this. He's rude, mean spirited, and will side with those who can either bring him power or who can gain a measure of fame and thus he can look highly important when he is with them. He'll do anything to save his own life (such as when Harry saw him in the pensieve giving up the names of his fellow Death Eaters in order to get out of Azkaban). And just like a certain Hogwarts teacher (Snape), he clearly has his favorites and treats them far better than anyone else.

Karkaroff's treatment of Viktor Krum and the other boy was not rudeness to the second boy, but favoritism. Krum was Karkaroff's favorite student, his golden boy, his Quidditch hero. He wanted Krum- the famous one- to be the Durmstrang champion because he probably figured that if the famous Viktor Krum couldn't do it, no one could.

(And even if Karkaroff wasn't a fictional character, you couldn't track him down. Voldemort's followers killed him because he betrayed Voldemort.)

It was rude but it was the way they showed how Karakraff characters really is. We needed to understand that he is rude and he obviously favored Krum because of how great he was.

I think you are over reacting a bit about it, I think he just didn't like him and its not nice to dribble food down yourself. I don't think he's supposed to be a mean person, thats the point. And it shows his favoritism to krum. (yes krum is spelt with a k)

I know what you're talking about, but I just can't remember the character who he said that to. But yeah, if I were that kid, I would have turned around and punched him in the face.

Have a little caution in condemning those who 'disgust you' for it could only come back to someday bite you. Do you also vent your wrath on motion picture characters? If so, then you have something wrong in your thinking and makeup personalty.
