Driving through the Appalachians during the morning or early afternoon hours. The sun hits them just right and they become beautiful. There has to be just enough haze so that one can see the contrast between dark and light more clearly. Every once in awhile, one can see a small farm in a valley right next to a mountain and it is breathtaking. It is better when the house and barn are a little older. It reminds one of how people settled this area before highways and cars. It reminds one of how far this country has come and how brave those first European settlers were to have settled there.

The most beautiful thing that I have ever seen is the birth of a baby. Even though it is also the grossest thing that you have ever seen with all the blood, etc. it is also the most beautiful thing you have ever seen because you have helped a new life enter this world. Their first breath takes yours away, you hear their cry and it makes your own eyes weld up with tears. Your overcome with multiple emotions at once as you stare upon a pure, helpless, loving human being. This is the most beautiful thing in the world.

On a lark I decided to comply with a requirement of one of my undergraduate courses, that I sit through and give an written account of a student music recital (circa 1988?). Keeping in mind that I had never heard a trained voice before, up close, live, that I had no clue whatsoever what was about to occur, a young woman walks to the stage and begins singing a Schubert lieder.

It is no exaggeration to say she was at the top of her game that afternoon. That I was able to refrain from soiling my underwear was a small miracle that I'm glad of, as I was not prepared psychologically to hear that voice. And afterwards, for the rest of the day, I was in a state of disbelief, unable to finish anything, so I just walked aimlessly about the city, pondering this new phenomenon I had encountered.

One of my professors said this: The three most beautiful things in the world are: a sleeping baby, a naked woman, and a running horse.
