Maybe I'm missing something, but I'll point out the obvious...it's kinda hard to arrest someone when they're dead.

Suicide is technically legal in North America, Western Europe and Anglo-Saxan countries. In the past people who have attempted suicide have been charged with a criminal offence. Today it is recognized as a mental illness. Sure, the cops will try to stop you and possibly put you in a mental health institution but you will not be held for breaking the criminal code.
Suicide bombings in the West are illegal not because of the suicide element but because you would be committing an offence meant to harm or murder others. Physician assisted suicide is illegal just as it is illegal to help coax someone to jump off a building. It is not the self killing that is held illegal but the murdering or assistance of ending the lives of others.

Well....the Japanese used to have Hari-kari, or a sword to the gut, as an honorable way to die for an individual trapped in a bad situation. I don't know if it's still LEGAL, but they're the only ones I can think of at the moment. On the OPPOSITE side, the MUSLIMS believe in legal MURDER, as the men can kill their families, daughters, etc. for "bad" living, to save the family honor. Must be so nice to live in a peaceful society like that. Some Muslims still practice that , there is a case in the USA just recently, where a father killed his two children and wife to "save" his family honor, she wanted a divorce because he beat her and the children regularly. SUCH a nice guy, too...

Attempted suicide is illegal because if you attempt and don't succeed, they will prosecute. In Oregon, doctor-assisted suicide for terminally ill patients is legal based on a very strict set of circumstances though.
