Someone wrote on the hood of my car with what seemed to be a rock or some chalk and sratched the surface. The scratches are not deep into the paint and multiple people say they are removealbe. I neighbor let me use a variable speed polisher and told me to use some rubbing compound, but I need to know the difference between the multiple kinds of pads available. Thanks for the help.

Foam pads are the newer way of doing things, they tend to leave fewer swirl marks.Polish the scratches out with the foam pad then wash it out and squeeze it dry before you use it to apply and polish a wax to fill the compound swirls.

I found that wool pads are able to get scratches out more effectively than a foam pads. Foam pads can get out minor scratches, but for deeper scratches I prefer to use wool. However there are different grades of foam pads ranging from stiffer to soft. After removing scratches with wool pad, use a softer foam pad to polish the clearcoat to give the paint a nice shine.
