1997 Chevy S-10 pick-up. I've tired everything including what the manual says, but can't get the shift stick out of park.

I finally took the cover off and by pressing a plastic piece it releases the metal insert low enough to take out of gear.

What has happened and how can I fix it. Did a little piece break? I've sprayed WD-40 all around..

you wouldnt have to done that. just take it loose from the tranny and work the gears by hand from the tranny. theres a pin in your column, it probably stuck.

There is a problem with the brake-transmission shift interlock. Could be a blown brake light fuse. Use this procedure to shift out of park til you can fix it.
Set park brake
Turn ignition key to first knotch where nothing comes on except the shift indicator light.
Shift into neutral.
Now start and shift vehicle as normal.

Looks like the mechanics of the plunger of the gear shifter have broke. . basically what it does is push a rod straight down which pushes a tab down . So you can move it out of the dentent (mecahnical lock) Determine which part is broke and looks like a salvage yard will do. Sorry you got to live with it to you fix it

Do your brake lights work?

Could be the safety switch on the brakes.
