Not all do, but some are so steeped in the academic setting, they know nothing else

Being an ex-professor-full-time for 5 years (and being unusual since I hated my own college education), when I started teaching I was really shocked at how lacking in social skills most profs had and have. I think it is because of a couple of reasons. People are drawn to the profession because it gives them a chance to work independently so it could attract non-social types to begin with. Also, the work is often very solitary, and they don't have much interaction with others. Also, if you get tenure, it's basically a ticket that lets you stay isolated since you have a guaranteed job with no need ever to 'network.' I could tell you some stories you wouldn't believe about the lack of social skills in professors!

I am an older student, going back to college and I really like most of the professors I have. I like them much better than most people, because they are not sleepwalking through life trying to get as much stuff as they can. I also see so many apathetic young students, I don't know how the professors can bear to make the effort.

I don't think professors lack social skills...I think that is too broad of a comment...

Generally, universities hire professors for their research abilities. Teaching is their second job, and I'm sure most of them would rather not deal with students.

The word is institutionalized. Kind of like how people who have been in prison for a long time have trouble functioning in the outside world (see Shawshank Redemption) Think of academia as a kind of prison.

Most don't. The problem is that you don't know how to talk to them. They are intelligent, and so are their friends - they talk politics, science, religion, current events. Not a lot of them gossip about celebrities or compare iPods. And they usually don't actually like college students all that much, and they don't want to talk to you.

because when they were in college they were the quote unquote "GEEKS" and they were the ones that never made it to first base and the ones who always were doing the "Jocks" papers a so they could play ball, and they never went to parties.

Did you get a bad report card?

Instead of screwing around on answers, why don't you try studying harder?
