As one grows older, one accumulates a greater cache of experiences and daily life consists of fewer and fewer novel occurances. A large store of memories allows for even moderately novel experiences to be effortlessly (subconsciously) placed into context and therefore feeling less intense.
The aged often become practiced at "putting things in perspective", meaning to keep in mind which things are truly important in their lives. This grants the ability to assign a more or less accurate level of importance to experiential events that the young are incapable of.

When you are young, everything is new. There is that innocence. You are either on top of the world, or you have the weight of it on your shoulders, because things are so new. When everything you experience is a new adventure, things can change from better to worse and vice-versa very quickly.

The innocence that the young have is fascinating as you watch them experience the common things in life, and watch it unfold as they learn more about the world.
