I grew up on classic rock/blues and jazz from all the time spent with my dad. I also like a lot of alternative/indie music of today ( seeing that is the only good music.) I know it is a person's opinion to choose what kind of music they like, but most of it is horrible. Rap is lacking everything, from the lyrical value to the actual music. Pop music, which is like Good Charlet and Reliant K ( who actually call it "Punk") is pitiful. Real punk was lost in the 80's ( Sex Pistols/Romones/The Clash). So why are there so few good artists. My chosen few that are good are :
Franz Ferdinand, Wolfmother, Modest Mouse, Coldplay, Gorillaz, the good the bad and the queen, Foo Fighters.

Good question. I really don't know the answer, but teens don't listen to a lot of older music and don't have anything to compare this modern crap to. Plus, it's on the radio. And now there's MTV. I'm one of few kids my age that actually listens to "oldies" radio and that music. The music today cannot compare with that from the past decades. Nat King Cole, the Eagles, Sex Pistols, Sam Cooke, whoever! Now, that's your real music. I just choose to listen to the music I like, forget the billboard charts. Whenever I go on iTunes I'm just in awe at how crappy the songs are on their top 10 list.

Edit: Yes, all of you are correct everyone is entitled to their own opinion. Still, it's a legit question, and good one.

I would love to have known what music you consider so much better from the early 2000's. I also hate pop music. I have always hated pop music and I;ve been listening to it much longer than you have. However, that does not mean that I haven;t found great music to listen to. Using Live365, I can stream from any number of internet radio stations. Live365 also lets you sort easily so you can find the station or stations you love. Currently my faves are Sirens of Song and Musical Justice. With the Freecorder app, it;s easy to record that stream (however, I cannot vouch for the legality of that). There is great music out there - like all great things, you have to look for it.

Because there was time when people worked hard to achieve some position but now a days anything is music, if you are drunk they call it Rock, if you are high that is Pop, if you want to hit some say in words that is called Rap. If you want to wear Grandpa's cloth that is Rap and Hip Hop. And if you want to listen some thing nice cool good for mind and heart they will call you OLD FASHIONED.

So you judge what will be the quality?

There is only so much you can do with blues scales and jazz scales so its not really gonna advance and people will get bored of it. Pop is AWFUL, very occasional ok song. Dance music can be made on a computer in 5 minutes and now Heavy Metal is going down hill thanks to the likes of Linkin Park who headline at Download - WHY?????? They have noooo talent. What happened to the stoner scene - bands like corrosion of conformity and spiritual beggars arent that heard of. Especially not in England. I think the way forward is Swedish Metal bands.

Because it doesn't take much to entertain people any more.

Try watching Subterranean on late at night on MTV2. There are bands there which will open your eyes to what ELSE is out there.

Try: The Shins, James Blunt, Amy Winehouse, Battles.

And my old-timey faves:
Nirvana, Ween, Kyuss, Melvins

Remember: Anything that needs to be "promoted" or sponsors a product is probably not that great artistically.

You cannot generalize about music saying is but when exists kinds and kinds of music genres. Those types that are 'bad' for your taste and might be for my taste also does not mean that music goes from bad to worse. Stil exists some good artists with excelent music and lyrics, like Keane, Keith Urban, Nickelback, and so more....

Boy, oh boy, do I AGREE !
We 're into a bit different music.
I like a lot of different genres of music, but, I 'll talk about Rock 'n' Roll.
Recently I liked Aqua, No Doubt, Uncle Cracker, ... I don 't listen to radio stations that play contemporary rock. I used to.
My radio is now purposely stuck on a local station that plays 60's & 70's Rock.
The present-day rock groups I watch on 'Saturday Night Live' ... and, believe me, 95% of them suck !

I just stick to Latin music. I dont like that other stuff. Music used to be good buts its not anymore same goes for tv shows it used to be good but tv shows sucks these days. Also radio stations play out songs so much and rap is the worst of them all it shouldnt even be classified as music its should be classified as annoying..

Sounds like your dad gave you a sound musical education.

Here's the thing on music, the older you get, the less you like the currently produced music.

And there's always been bad music, it's just that the good music survives, and the bad music is forgotten, so we will aways have good 'old' music because that is what has survived.
