My car temperature gauge runs hotter while idling or in stop and go traffic, goes back to normal while driving. I have plenty of coolant and the thermostat is fairly new. Any ideas on what causes this or how to take care of it?

The fault is most likely with your fan belt /water pump pulley.
when you are at cruising speed the momentum makes the pulley connected to the water pump run well enough to circulate coolant in sufficient volume which does not happen when you are idling
the solution for you is to tighten the fan belt connected with the water pump & also check the water pump pulley bearing for any bearing failure.
act fast my friend as hi temps for long time is INJURIOUS to your car engine.

Electric radiator cooling fan is not turning on.
Could be a number of possible problems.

1) Bad motor.
2) Bad relay.
3) Bad thermal switch.
4) Bad connection.
5) Blown fuse.

You may want to seek a pro's help troubleshooting this one.

ADDED:
The electric fan does not generaly come on untill the engine coolant temperature reaches 205 deg. F. (or there abouts)
So running a little hot is normal.
However, if it nearly reaches HOT and the electric fan does not turn on, I'd have it checked out.

your engine will get hotter sat in traffic due to lack of air flow....the best way to check all is working OK is to leave car with engine ticking over...until the fans kick in....this can take some time ..depends on make and model...the average temp gauge has three parts....can be a blue etc....an upper part that is most of the time red...as of danger....the part in the middle is classed as normal....that means your engine is operating within its temp ranges....if your fans come on after long idle no need to worry....and save yourself some money....if don't seek pro advice...

your cooling fins are stopped up. if you can pull out your own radiator, do this, get a cheap wading pool at wal mart, put 6 inches of water in it and get some laundry detergent and put it in. let it soak for and hour, then use a little water pressure, alittle I said, to rinse out ht edebris in the fins. the detergent will loosen it up and you will rinse it out. look inside at the tubes, if they have alot of white corrosion take to a rad shop and have it dissassembled and clean. make sure you cooling fan , if electric works, ok>that was assumed on my part..turn on a/c and it should run constant. if ur fan is inop, check the relay and the fuse.. can't find it? locate a electrical parts locater guide for ur car.. it will tell you exactly where the relay is..

your car will run hot when idling or in traffic because there is no air flowing on to the radiator when you water temp gets to about 90/100 degrees the fan will kick in to simulate this air flow you get when you are moving

Your thermostat is not opening. Or you need a new radiator cap.

if it has an electric fan the fan motor could be bad or the sensor that turns it on
