I have a 1999 Sierra Z-71. I want ability to disable auto headlights. Is there a replacement switch that has this function, or are there any other work arounds?

I am required to dim my headlights when going through the gate of my military installation and also when driving through specified "blackout" areas where soldiers are using night vision equipment.

From a GMC Sonoma owners manual:
Does not apply to Canadian models.
You may turn off the auto headlamps/DRL system by doing the following:
1. Turn the ignition to run.
2. Press the DOME OVERRIDE button 4 times within 6 seconds. After the fourth press of the button a chime will sound informing you the system is off. The system will revert back to the automatic mode when the ignition is turned OFF then to RUN again.
3. To return to automatic mode, press the DOME OVERRIDE switch 4 times within 6 seconds (you'll hear the chime again) or turn the ignition OFF and then to RUN again.

So basically, you can turn it off, but you'll have to do it each time you start out driving.

Is there a logical reason to want to do this? Your vehicle has been designed to have daytime running lights, why mess with something so trivial? Put an eight inch lift kit under it, build up the rest of the drive train and go do some off-roading.

Are you in Canada? If so..it is illegal to use a vehicle without daytime running lights. Why? Because they save lives through making you more visible to other motorists and pedestrians. If you disable the feature you're vehicle will not pass any safety inspections, including the OPP road safety checks (as an example).

On my Ford truck. If I move the headlight switch to the off position, then the autolamp feature is turned off. In my case, turn the switch full counterclockwise, then move it one position clockwise.
