It's normal. Infants have a need to be held. You could get a baby carrier, and let them sleep in it while you do other things. I never had my baby cry it out and he is happy and independent now.

IF your baby is younger than 4 months old (5 for some) then they DO NOT have the ability to sooth themselves to sleep; even according to Ferber who is the "cry it out" guy (though that is not all there is to it).
Try putting your baby down just slightly awake and leaving your hand on her, even hovering over her for a bit.
Also if you have a old shirt or maybe a worn blanket that you can wear around a few days to get your scent on it and then give it to your baby to hold. That way she can smell you still. Only thing that worked with my first.
Maybe the sheets are to cold for her (more of a winter baby problem) if that is it try warming them up first with a hot water bottle or a warm towel from the dryer.

I am going through the same issue. There really isn't much else too do from what I've experienced unless you want them to cry themselves to sleep which we all know now isn't good for them. We have been holding our son for about twenty minutes or until his limbs are limp and floppy-then we put him down. He will stay down because he is in the deepest stage of sleep.
People have told me it gets easier. Other friends have told me about sleeping with their babies. My husband won't do it and sometimes I sleep with our 2 month old on my chest (which he loves) and we both can get some sleep. They taught me this at the hospital.
I don't know if I was very helpful but if you figure out the solution, please email me jbernacchi74@yahoo.com.
Good luck!

Music. We always played soft children's songs in the background and patted our kids on the back until they slept. Another good idea is to make a tape of your voice, talking quietly to the child. This will reassure him/her and make them think you are near. You might even make a blanket (or anything) smell like you. You have to trick the baby into thinking you're in the room.
Hope it works! There's nothing worse than running around on no sleep!

Hi Tamara,
Swaddle baby snugly with a light blanket.
Make sure baby is sleepy.
Play soft music in the background, lullabye CD's for Babies work great.
Make sure baby is fed and has clean diaper.
Here is the gut wrenching part:
Let your baby cry to sleep. I know it sounds cruel but you are actually helping your little one to learn to self soothe themselves; which is important. Right now your baby thinks he or she needs to be held to go to sleep, you are going to have to retrain him/her. Let them cry, going in there once every twenty minutes, however DO NOT pick them up out of the crib. Just rub their back and whisper it's time to go to sleep. Then smile and walk away. It will be torture for you but if you don't do it know you are going to be dealing with this for years.
It should take a few nights but within a week baby will be able to fall asleep by themselves. What a valuable gift you are giving your baby; it actually helps them build confidence (even this early) that they can soothe themselves.

Swaddling would help. Also try placing the baby in the crib before they are fully asleep.
