Why would you want a drug that ends menstruation ? Womanhood is not a disease, you know and when a woman experiences pain and heavy mood swings that's related to her periods, it doesn't mean that menstruation is the cause of it. It's a hormonal problem (that may have emotional and/or other causes) that can be treated safely without drugs.

It is true though that such drugs already exist. Recently the FDA has approved Lybrel, a pill that stops a woman's periods forever.

I don't think they will ever invent a drug without horrible side effects to end women's periods, because it just doesn't make sense in the first place to end something that is a natural biological function with chemicals (that are on itself harmful). It doesn't seem "safe" nor healthy to me either to end periods surgically. A woman eventually would no longer be fertile in that case, plus suffers from a range of other side effects, since it's not natural to mess with organs and biological functions that are there for a reason and to function together with all other organs.

They have already done that. Seasonale and other extended cycle birth control pills have been on the market for a while now, giving women the options of less periods a year. There is another pill which should be available soon to eliminate periods altogether. Most healthcare professionals agree there is no reason for a women to have a period and in fact have grown more detrimental as time has progressed as women are having more periods than ever before secondary to factors like fewer pregnancies and earlier onset of menarche. What you can do right now though, and plenty of women are doing, is to continuously take the active hormonal pills of birth control and skip the week without hormones.

Safely with NO side affects? Maybe.

Every drug out right now (Seasonale, Lybrel, etc) has side affects.

I think it will be a long time before they have a drug out with zero side affects.

Not without ending the ability to get pregnant. Perhaps there will come a drug that will stop FSHRH stimulating FSH and starting our cycle. However, I don't think that's top priority.
