This is the question I tried to post and it wouldn't let me.

Why are we frightened of that which we don't know or don't understand?

I can understand an animal's fear of the unknown/unexpected; they don't have the intelligence to look for clues as to whether something is benevolent or malevolent.

Humans on the other hand are graced with the largest brain per mass and we should be able to rationalise such events for ourselves and yet we are still plagued by real or perceived fears.

I'm not immune to the phenomenon myself being deathly afraid of balloons and heights.

were all made with a protection mechinism and fear of the unknown starts when we learn that being hurt is not a good thing, so pain causes us to look at something such as falling and thinking about being all broken up makes us not do it. going off into an unkown also makes one think of death or not returning and it also uses pain as a trigger mechinisim .

We're afraid of what we don't know, for just that reason, we don't know. After we learn about, we can make a judgement about whether or not fear it, but our instincts are to be wary about the unknown, because it's safer that way.

If you mean the human mind can make us insane with no rational explanation, I agree. We are way to clever for our own purpose.
