Dark Energy is the energy you're left with when you take a box, and you remove all of the matter and energy from within the box. It is the energy inherent in a piece of spacetime. Until recently, astronomers would have told you that it is zero, or extremely small, but recent data show that it dominates the universe.
If the dark energy is more negative in pressure than vacuum energy (a thing we would call "phantom energy") then it will accelerate the universal expansion until everything is accelerated away from everything else: the Big Rip. There is no evidence for phantom energy, however.

Dark energy is a a catch all for the fact that there seem to be something accelerating the expansion of the universe which we don't understand. The Big Rip theory does not exists and is mentioned only here and grey line physics.
