I prefer to see a avatar then the grey avatars, i'm sure they know how to create one because when you start your account it gives you the option to make one :)

If they want to be grey it is their choice, If they don't know how to get an avatar they would ask how.

Well, I don't judge a user by their avatar (or whether or not they have one)... but most users have avatars... those who don't probably like not having an avatar... since most people have avatars, they want to stand out by not having one, I guess. Or, they can't find an avatar that they like. If they didn't know how to get an avatar, they'd probably just ask.
