"My husband and I went ALMOST coast to coast. NJ to South Dakota last year." - South Dakota is in the middle of the country, it isn't even close to the west coast. You have to wonder how some people got through high school geography.
The distance from NYC to Santa Monica California is 2,800 miles. That is about 42 hours of driving time, of course no one drives that straight through. Most people will only drive about 8 hours, so that would be about 5-6 days of driving. Of course you are going to want to make stops and stay some places a day or two so say about a week trip. You will spend $500 in gas, about $500 in food and drinks, and about $500 in hotel/motel costs...say $1500 total. You could trip that $200-$300, but then you wouldn't really see much and what would be the point.

Depends on how you travel. With a car it depends on the gas milage and how expensive gas is. A train would probably be cheapest if you could get one that made frequent stops in some pretty neat cities. Also how much you eat and how expensive you eat. Where you stay goes into considerstion too. Hotel? Motel? Campground? All of this goes into consideration when you're decideing how much to save up for a trip like this. Just to be save I'd say $1,000. I'd say that just incase there we're some unexpected problems and if you decided to do something spotaneous. You could probably make it on less though. But I'd rather be safe then sorry.

Well, there's many variables in the question. My husband and I went ALMOST coast to coast. NJ to South Dakota last year. We drove, stayed in motels along the way and spent 7 days in SD. We spent about $4,000.00. Now, I'm sure you could go cheaper and more expensive. We stayed at middle of the road motels like Hampton and Quality and Clubhouse. We drove an 8 cyl truck. We ate 1-2x's per day. I didn't include souvenirs in the total. Good luck! We had a GREAT time, worth every penny!

It depends how many are traveling and whether you camp, eat out, prepare your own food, and entrance fees to places you wish to visit-yes, even National Parks cost money. If you are visiting Parks, get a year pass.
We did the trip from Maine down to Tennessee and across to Texas then California and up to Washington state. We covered over 6000 miles in 4 weeks (some camping and some hotels) and it cost us (family of 5) about $2800. I must say that most of our meals I prepared on our camp stove. That saved us tons. We went to National Parks, amusement parks, even DisneyLand. It was a great trip. Try to find as many discounts as possible to hotels, parks and any other entrance fees. Good Luck!
