Even if that information will alleviate your suffering or save your life?

I agree that some people don't want to learn.

As long as you as the '' teacher '' can manage to stay a student
at heart at least you yourself will never stop learning and
understanding more.
With that attitude and as an example there is always hope.
But some people just don't seem to want to learn or understand,
are frightfully slow, or terribly late.
And there is no cure for sheer stupidity, forcing the issue is hopeless and frustrating.

Current best methods are being used by the cheney bush regime and their secret partners. You can join the CIA, get someone declared an enemy combatant and sent offshore to a secret CIA 'educational' facility. There they can be forced to believe or learn anything.

Or through more traditional methods, You could present all the pros and cons in a subjective and analytical manner and hope like hell that the recipient is open-minded enough to weigh the evidence and choose that which is best for them. Preaching and pontificating will only harden them against your efforts.

Violence? When I see the word "force" that's what instantly pops into my mind. I think the best way to "pursuade" someone to learn is to set an example, be patient and spend a lot of time with the student. It would help to know what you're trying to force someone to understand or learn.

The question pre-supposes you have something to teach,
1] worth knowing by someone else,
2] that the 'someone else] who wishes to know it is at the proper juncture in life progress and growth to be able to accept and absorb what you have to teach.

Growth isn't necessarily voluntary, but it usually can't be successfully forced.

The self-label 'guru' isn't a credential for wisdom.

Your credentials are conveyed better through your questions, such as, "What are you willing to give away to avoid being selfish?" are the best measure of the depth of your understanding.

At least from the perspective of one reader.

You cannot force anyone to think your thoughts. That is the law of free will. You can only exchange ideas and let someone decide that your idea is better than theirs. This is done in many ways: by persuasion, by indoctrination of feeble-minded people or children; by emotional experience.

Of course you can. You can force anyone to learn. They don't have to know they're learning.

ex.

When I was 11, I'd always complain about life. My brother got sick and tired of it one day and gave me a knife. He said if I was honestly that unhappy I could go kill myself. I realized what he knew all along: life is precious. I didn't know he was forcing me to learn, but I most certainly learned.

You could force it.
There are brain washing methods that have been proven over time to work quite well - think of Patty Hearst, for example.

She was kidnapped and isolated. Over time she began to depend on her captors for food and eventually information. Next thing y'know, she's robbing a bank on national tv and calling herself by a different name.

It's fairly simple, I think. Boot camp for the military - they take away individuality by shaving everyone's head, working them until they are exhausted and repeating over and over and over again the messages to be learned.
That seems rather "forced" to me!

You cannot. But consider: if you are constantly hitting obstacles of thought from those you try to enlighten it just may be that it is time for YOU to hush, really listen, and learn.

Just when we are convinced we are totally right, we usually discover a thought we forgot to think.

With that attitude, you never will. You have missed the point .

I hope one day you learn that tryng to "force" people will only lead to unhappiness.
