Laughter works in your favor because it generates enzymes in the brain and these chemicals trigger an ability for things like learning . My suspicion about longevity and well being are based on the fact that laughter removes stress hormones and adds Serotonin to the brain, another chemical for well-being.
A joke for example ...Most of our brain is involved in 'getting' a joke. The left side of the brain analyses language of the joke. The frontal part, which is associated with emotions, is also active. And the right side of the brain makes the connection that finally 'gets' it.
Emotional responses such as anger, love and sorrow are the function of the brain’s largest region, the frontal lobe. However, when it comes to laughter there’s no single area of the brain in charge.
Instead, laughter is an extremely complicated human response. It requires the brain to take in and process both visual and auditory information before tickling the motor centres of our central nervous system. This produces responses as varied as a giggle, guffaw or great big gut-busting spasm.
MRIs have shown medical researchers is that the limbic system, located below the brain’s cerebral cortex, is heavily involved in laughter.
Sometimes called the reptilian part of our brain, the limbic system controls basic human urges such as hunger and responses to danger as well as motivation and emotional behaviours.
Two different parts of the system are involved in laughter; the amygdala, a small almond-shaped structure deep inside the brain, and the hippocampus, a tiny, seahorse-shaped structure. both of which also play a part in memory, amygdala is heavily involved with fear too.
However, the limbic system doesn’t act alone in the case of laughter. When the laughter is loud and uncontrollable, then researchers know the hypothalamus, sometimes called the “master gland” which links the central nervous system to endocrine system, has joined the party.

I think We all like to laugh, and generally it makes us feel better. There are three different theories for what people find humorous. The incongruity theory is when people's logical expectations don't match up with the end of the situation or the joke. The relief theory is when tension is built up and we need a release of emotion; What we consider normal, healthy laughter doesn't come in different forms. Laughter is rigidly structured the same way as any animal call. All types of laughter should be a series of short vowel-like syllables such as 'ha-ha-ha' or 'tee-hee-hee' We often laugh because we're happy, but laughing can also make us happy - and healthy. Laughter releases endorphins, neurotransmitters that have pain-relieving properties similar to morphine and are probably connected to euphoric feelings, Laughing is also a full body workout. Some researchers estimate that laughing 100 times is as much of a workout as 15 minutes on an exercise bike laughter is healthy for you in a variety of ways, such as boosting the immune system and reducing stress. So if you feel like you're getting sick or you don't have much energy, stop worrying about going to the gym or the health center. You just need to find funnier friends.
I hope that will help you Good luck!!!!!!!!

I have found understanding the joke really helps!! Jokes that a Canadian would tell won't be funny to someone from a different country!! There is a language barrier!! I've tried twice now to tell a joke now the first one was bad but the second one makes everybody here roar ! All I got was I don't get it or not funny!!So I'll contain my jokes and tell them to people who would get it!! I don't think electronics or chemicals have anything to do with it!! It's all in the interpreting !!

Look here
http://www.howstuffworks.com/laughter1.htm
It tells you the changes your body goes through while you are laughing. There is also a bunch of links on the bottom that specifically tell how laughter affects your brain and your limibic system. Hopefully, it helps.

It is when I overheard a conversation on a cruise ship and the captain asked "Are we in port yet?", to which the next in command replied "no sir, we are still up to our knees in wine".
