an ankle bracelet - if money is a problem, you find cute costume ankle bracelets for less than $5 - a step up would be sterling silver - next step would be 10K or 14K gold then you can add a small charm -
Teen girls find ankle bracelets to be a cute summer accessory - my son just gave a silver ankle bracelet with a small silver heart on it to his girl friend for her birthday.

I am turning 17 in two months and I think your niece, like most girls, would want either cash or a gift card to her favorite store. You could also take her out for her birthday on a day you are both free and take her to her favorite restraunt and then spend the rest of the evening together shopping. I did that one year with my sister and we both had a good time. I hope that helps =]

Budget?

1. Lets go to the mall. New clothes, shoes, and accesories such as new backpacks for school, bags, trip to a beauty salon ......... Charge it on plastic. Depending on whether she likes your company and vice versa, a half day or full day of shopping is a nice way to spend quality time together.

If she cannot come with you, ask for her favorite store and buy a gift certificate.

A subscription to a magazine that suits her personality.

Though I'm not 17, I'm a huge fan of the Utne Reader. Check it out online.

Good luck!

A book, well chosen. Just go to a library and look at books for young women, something about her future, her interests, her possible choice of career. And write something personal inside. She will keep it forever.

How about a picture of both of you when she's way much younger in a frame that you hand make?! Brings back a lot of sweet memories!

A gift certificate for a mall, rather than one store, that way she can get what she likes.
