what is our real purpose here?

Our "real" purpose in life is to use our brains as much as possible to make of life what is most enjoyable to us. Our brain is man's tool of survival and is the tool that tell us the difference between real and unreal, just and unjust, good and evil, moral and immoral, rational and irrational. For humans, there can be no happiness without rational thinking.

80% of humanity, the religious folks, don't need to ask the meaning of life, the church tells them....the supernatural explanation. But the rest of us can't swallow religious dogma, because there's no evidence. Nobody can prove that there life after death, that people are tortured or rewarded after life or that there's invisible spirits running around.

I've come to two conclusions recently:

1. Life has no meaning
2. Life has a million meanings.

First, there's a certainty that death and annihilation awaits not only you, but the Earth in general. It's an astonomical certainty that our sun will supernova and leave the earth a burnt crisp, not to mention all the other extinction level events around the corner.

Second, the million things that give us meaning are the pleasurable experiences we can conjure up during the short period we are here on the earth, in the form of the relationships we have with our kids and other people, and the 'housekeeping' types of purposes. What i mean by that are the curing disease, ending hunger, improving literacy, reducing crime, preventing war, helping other kinds of things.

So the bottom line is, we only have a temporary meaning to life, to reduce pain and increase pleasure, other than that everything is lost to oblivion.

To be or not to be? "To be" is temporary and "not to be" is inevitable.....

This question was asked in a slightly different way earlier today. I repeat: the meaning, or purpose or significance of life is to live. Life is the purpose of all life.

A poem I wrote explains SOME of it!

For Now

For now while the soul's held hostage,
by the flesh with all its frolic;

This life's a passage
that stretches between,
two points of interest,
with both unseen.

Where detours to demons
are generously hidden,
luring God's children
to all things forbidden.

Where angels abide
and follow ready,
to catch descent
from a foot unsteady.

Where youth and wisdom
separately learn,
that throughout each life,
they merely take turns.

Where love and hate,
life and death,
wrath and mercy,
taste the same breath.

Where laughter and tears
are sure to take place,
and each at random,
will share the same face.

Where comfort and pain,
boredom and pleasure,
prosperity and poverty,
all build together.

There is no meaning for Life. You cannot find meaning for every thing in nature.

To procreate. Simpler than you thought, huh?
Unless you want to consider we were created by God to worship Him.
