YES
And that's what's wrong with you kids today. We were more afraid of our parents than the cops, and kids today fear neither.
It seems to me parents left out the RESPECT lesson the past few decades......

My kids have found that honesty and responsibility go A LONG way with me. If they fess up something they did to me, they usually do not get a punishment. I've always tried to foster an environment where my kids feel like they can come to me with any problem they have. So far it's worked!! As long as it continues that way, that's what I'll keep doing. As far as the willingly taking a spanking -- I can probably count on one hand how many times I've spanked all three of my kids, but I can say none of those times did they willingly accept it. But, then again, I don't know any child that accepts any punishment 'willingly', they may comply with it, but I'm not sure the do it because they WANT to--they do it because they know if they don't the punishment will be worse (and I'm not talking just spanking here.) If I give a consequence at my house, and my children complain or whine about it--the consequence will double (and I'm not talking spankings.) I guess, I just took a really long time to say that kids probably don't think they deserve a spanking, they've just learned that by just accepting it and getting it over with eliminates the possibility of a worse spanking or punishment.

I wish my parent's only believed in spankings or other similar punishments, as my mother believed in a serious beating to us kids with anything she could get her hands on.......We all turned out OK and it made me a stronger person able to withstand a lot of pain, but it still was not necessary. My son is very fortunate i just have to raise my voice to him and he knows I mean business or else! What I have never decided because he straightens out real fast so I have never had to think of anything to do, but he's heard the war stories of my child-hood!

Yes, and my parents still DO believe in spankings. They shun parents who don't physically punish their children. Sometimes my dad overdoes it and once I saw him lift up my 8 year old brother by his foot and hang him upside down with his hand and whipped his whole body. It was awful and that type of punishing is way beyond discipline. That was just abuse.

A telling off was sufficient for me! I think it might well depend on the parents and the child concerned. I was a really well behaved child. My older sister was hateful. I saw her get some good hidings (yes, she deserved them). On saying that, I did get 'buckle end of the belt once' thanks to my sister - and my mum would spank us when she thought it was necessary.
We were never hit on a regular basis - and I don't consider myself abused. I think my sister and I had totally different temperments and still have to this day.
Whilst I don't agree with hitting children around the head and beating them senseless - I do think a smack across the bum or fear of slipper/cane can keep some children in check.

Mine believed in both, they came up with some good ones to,beat you with a belt or whatever was handy. One time my dad stabbed me with a fork, and punched me in the belly made me stand on my toes for hours, but i lived to tell the story my kids had it better no belts or forks just spankings.

Spankings for sure. My punishment was a spanking.
Take with a grain of salt though as I did not grow up in the US and it wasn't/isn't taboo to spank your child.

My parents were big on spankings if it followed the rule of "I am spanking you because the thing that I had did could have hurt or killed me". Other than that we were grounded a lot.
