The triple beam balance is a comparatively inexpensive but accurate device for measuring mass in the laboratory or industry. The device gets its name from the three rails on which the manually manipulated weights slide to counterbalance the mass being measured. The triple beam balance works by comparing the mass being measured with three standards of different sizes. The two heavier masses have detents in their beams to position them a precise distance from the balance's fulcrum. The third weight is used for fine adjustments and slides freely along its beam.
Unlike a spring balance that measures force, hence weight of an object, the triple-beam balance does not depend on the exact magnitude of the earth's gravitational field; only its uniformity. You will therefore get the same reading in Juneau as in Rio de Janeiro despite the slightly different magnitudes for gravity at these two locations.

put the thing you want to mass on the balance take the largest mass beam and move it so it is set and the mark just before the mark that makes it too heavy do the same thing with the second beam then move the third and lightest mass beam over so that it blances and it lines up with the mark on the side and this is the fifth sentence

Is this series of questions an alternative to simply reading your textbook and doing your homework? Did you forget the book? Did you not pay attention in class when this was taught? Are you just not willing to use your own imagination to think of ways these tools might be used?
