It is never any use giving in to intimidation and abuse I know I have been there. Is the apprentice nearly at the end of his apprenticeship?. An old trick when an apprentice is almost qualified and due to the full wage rate for the job is to bully and intimidate him into leaving then employer is not liable for redundancy payments then another low wage apprentice can be hired. If he is in a union he should approach the head office not his shop steward who could be in on the scam then the Department of Employment The Police and one of the law firms that specialise in workers rights.

Leave the kid alone, he must feel that he can handle it for now. Men have funny ways of bonding that dont last forever. Not my cup of tea but lads have to be left to sort it. From experience in the small places like you talk about you have 3 options.
1.Put up with it
2.Leave
3.Lay someone out.
Trying to do anything official about it will obviously involve the second option. A "quiet word" with the bullies outside work might work, make them aware of option 3 :-)
Not my usual touchy feely, justice oriented type of reply i know but i,ve been there, its either take it as fun till it stops or knock em out i'm afraid, trying to reason with workplace bullies just ends up showing a weaker side which they will exploit

This is beyond the joke. Am I correct is it the Big White Chief involved? I agree with service team. Police this is common assault at best. He will lose his job and find it difficult to get another but if it goes on like this he will suffer serious injury and not be able to work at all maybe for ever this sort of thing does not go away.
Also an action for damages for personal injury and an employment tribunal but get advice. Throw the book at this lot if you can they are vermin

there is an previous proverb, "talk quietly yet carry a huge stick". Make a checklist of each thing that he/she does. shop stressful copies of something available (emails, etc) and if collegues see something, ask them to jot down a quick digital mail to you confirming what occurred. build your self a rock reliable case against them after which you have 2 options. in the event that they're are that undesirable, positioned a replica on your directors table. or you could positioned a replica on their table and say "have a examine, now decrease back off or it's going to locate this is much greater up the ladder". If he does not decrease back off then in simple terms pass see the director, even if it relatively is often usefull to have a carry over somebody like that although in case they do it to human beings, and at that element if absolutely everyone seems to be in a matching concern to you, gently remind them that there continues to be a brown envelope with some exciting preparation in it lurking approximately.....

The problem is if the lad is laughing it off and someone calls the police and he denies it, then that could place the person in an awkward position.

First he needs to leave for his own safety! Do you know his parents? Are they the approachable type? If so have a word with them & see can they get him to see sense.
Its easy to say "Go to the cops!" but if he does it is going to be his word against the boss! & normally the cops will take the bosses word. He needs to have people on his side to back him up. Bullying in the work place unfortunately is still laughed off.

My army background would tell me that this lad needs a taste of his own medicine and a lot worse. Trust me, that quashes ANY bullying!
Unfortunately civvy street doesn't allow for that and the law MUST get involved as soon as possible.
Make sure you collect evidence; i.e. dates/times these events happen, exactly what happens, photo's of physical injuries, etc.

I would call the police and make an official complaint about multiple assaults. The police will investigate and hopefully frighten this bully if not prosecute him. Either way the girl should leave.
