I have a very strange question to ask. It's regarding the answerphones on mobile phones. My friend's phone is still set to receive answers on her mobile phone even though she died two years ago. Her recorded message is still there with her voice. Her phone was just a bog standard, cheapy, pay as you go phone and obviously no credit has been put on it for two years yet when I ring it, her voice is still there. How is this possible? It's weird.

Even though the phone is out of minutes the account is still open. If I were you and I got to missing my friend, I would call it just to hear her voice again.

It's because any pay as you go cell still has a database that all the voice mails are stored. If it were a contract phone it would just tell you that the number is no longer in service. However being that it was a pay as you go type of deal the number is probably out of circulation being that she purchased the phone. And if you could get your hands on that phone you could reactivate it and change the voicemail. But I don't see why you would want to do that. But the simple answer is being that there is no contract for those types of phones a number can stay active as long as 1) the company doesn't go out of business or 2) The number gets recirculated after a certain amount of time. Best bet is to contact the company and let them know if you want it gone.

When you phone a mobile that is turned of you get connected to the ntwork NOT the phone. It doesnt matter if its a cheap hphone or dear phone. The answering machine isnt actually on the phone. Its in the network or cyberspace or whatever you call it.
However if a phone hasnt been used for a while some networks will switch that number off and after a couple of months they will give the number to someone else
