First off MAC/APPLE equipment is proprietary or they only work with that system.
Second MAC and APPLE approach the computer world with an different philosophy than IBM or the clones. They try to sell the highest quality electronics. It is top of the line stuff not cheap Chinese or Asian knock offs. So you are getting top of the line. Its buying the Lincoln of electronics.
Third, MAC/APPLE developed a niche market which is high end graphics. While IBM, Dell and HP focus on the business market the Apple brand concentrated in capturing the media market which is high end print media, photo and television editing and very high end graphics for commercial purposes.
This means that APPLE equipment can handle those very fine very large graphic files and outputs. An APPLE monitor will be very high end and capable of imaging those media files easily and accurately.
So you must make a value judgement. If you are buying a computer for simple accounting or business get the IBM clones. If you want to do work with movies, video or outputting data to the film for the litho images of the printing press. And you want that computer last for years go with APPLE.
And no a Dell monitor will not work as well for as long. APPLE is a commercial product. A Dell is a comical product. I would avoid Dell even in IBM. They used to be a good company but lately they've been putting crap parts in their computers. I know because I fix other peoples computers, Honestly Dells are crap at this moment. If it wasn't for Dell I wouldn't have anything to do.
However. When you buy a MAC you get top of the line quality parts and computers.

Apple is great. I have a Mac and I am very pleased of the quality of Mac products.
First of all, you pay a lot of money for the brand... and the quality , of course. Then, think of the guaranty of the products. Apple products are better, in my opinion.
Anyway, Dell monitors are great as well. So, you choose what you think suits you best.

Because, Apple = Quality.
Apple's Monitor's are some of THE MOST quality LCD's I have ever seen. The detail is absolutely stunning.
Besides, Apple really doesn't have reputation for having their products priced cheap. The Iphone, the MAC's, all are expensive.

Apple is evil. They are attempting to gain a monopoly on hardware through their software. If mac os were ever to become most common os like windows then apple would jack up hardware prices they are basically just an evil company, moreso than microsoft, just not yet in position to exploit the people very well yet. You can see they charge a ton because they expect people to buy their monitor if they have already bought their computer unwittingly!
